I'm in the process of selling an Audi A4 to someone in NY. I live in VA. Once
a bill of sale and title are exchanged, is there a way for the buyer to drive
the car back to his home state?

Mohammed - My S6 came from NH, and I was able to get a temp permit in
Colorado (up to 30 days) and drive it back. The first person I spoke with at
the Boulder, Co DMV told me "no way" because I let slip that the car was in
NH. Dumb on my part.

Buuuut, I didn't take no for an answer. I went back at lunch (the nay sayer
was on break) and just told them I bought a car with NH plates and had to
drive it home to Vail (I was in Boulder, so I claimed the seller was a CU
student who never registered the car in CO). They issued a temp tag upon a
bill of sale and a title + proof of insurance.

I'd suggest that the NY purchaser do the same. Show up with all the
paperwork, get a temp tag and then drive home from VA with that. The buyer
can always claim to the DMV that the car is at the shop, or at the seller's
house, etc. But the less info you tell them, the better off you will be,
IMO.

Less desirable (and totally illegal) would be for the buyer to bring his/her
own tags from their old car and slap 'em on. That's a bit of a gamble,
though.

Of course, I assume that NY issues temp tags.

Good luck.
