I've read some of the replies, and I have a suggestion:  Install the top 
nut on the shock shaft, and firmly (REALLY firmly!) clamp the nut in a 
vise.  Using your handy dandy BFH, whack on the lower end of the strut 
along the axis, say at the point where the square portion is welded to 
the tube.  That should free it up.  Heat is your friend here, and it 
would be a good idea to use some as an enhancer.
