I didn't think the C4 A6 got the 30v V6 at all... Even the 98 A6 Avants were 12v right?

completely agree

If you don't need a huge car (if you're selling real estate in it you might be cramped in an A4), I'd look at an 00 or 01 A4, 1.8T or 2.8.  Not sure what your price point is, but the 98 A6 sedan (C5) is one to avoid.  I probably wouldn't look at a C5 A6 before '99, possibly '00
