The article quotea a difference of about $950 between TSDI and comparable gas-engined A4 - that's less than I would have thought (granted,
that's a UK price). Of course, waiting until the price of diesel is so much higher than gas wasn't too smart. It would have been better for them
to develop a presence when the two were closer in price... So in addition to the additional cost of the car, you know have to factor in upwards
of an extra $1 per gallon for fuel into your payback equation.

As an aside - wow, is the new A4 a great looking car! Very A6-like, but less 'teardrop' than the A6 and more sporty looking.... Can't wait to see
it in the flesh.... I'm not as crazy about the new dash arrangement (don't really care for it on the A6 either), with the extended hood over the nav
screen and the teardrop-shaped instrument binnacles - but I like the center stack detailing and the MMI control area.... And having a real nav
system available for the A4 finally brings it up to snuff.

I got curious whether Audi had made any progress in bringing a TDI model
to US shores, and typed in:
"Audi US"

Google's suggest feature finished the thought for me, tacking on "diesel".

Any guesses as to how hideously expensive the A4 3.0 TDI will be, or what
transmission options it'll have?

Looks like it's been pushed up (again) to mid 2009...

...or maybe not at all:

Gas prices are at an all-time high, GM and Ford are seeing SUV sales
plummet so the market has clearly shifted, the R10 impressed many on the
ALMS circuit...and Audi management is too busy sitting on their hands,
playing it "safe" and trotting out the never-ending excuses that US buyers
are too stupid to want a TDI, despite VW's successes.
