Replace 1 spring or both?

Always replace springs in pairs (with rare, racing-type of exceptions), even
if replacing with used.  Your mechanic is correct in refusing to replace
only one spring.

Also, if one spring broke... the other is likely going to suffer the same
fate (sooner rather than later).

Might be a good time to replace the shocks, especially after driving with a
broken spring.  Good luck!
