88 5KTQ front struts

... it really is that simple to change the strut cartridges. The way they
designed the front suspension allows the springs to remain under compression
as the strut cartridge is removed. You don't *need* the special tool, but
it sure makes the job easier. If you can't buy or borrow the tool you can
usually reach through the springs with some big pliers to loosen the caps.
There's supposed to be a dust shield between the springs and the strut, but
if you're just doing the struts now that dust shield is probably long gone.
Be careful not to disturb the suspension as you replace the strut ...
remember that the strut is the top reference for the suspension and if you
let the bottom part move around it can make reassembly more difficult.
You might want to consider doing the strut bearings ... of course that will
require dropping the springs ... as well as the lower control arm bushing
and sway bar bushings ... if you don't know if they've been done before they
will probably need it now ...

I have a 88 5KTQ and I need to replace the front struts, Bentley makes it
sound like I can just remove the 3 bolts from the strut mount and the
bearing
plate and pull it out can it be that simple? Is the weight of the car enough
to
neutralize the springs. Bentley refers to a tool 2069, will I need it?
