Luckily I have not had this issue with my 86 type 44 Turbo Quattro @ 295,000
km in Toronto climate. I'll ask mechanic next time to look at that joint.

Check the exciter or "field" wire, it will keep the alternator from
charging if you have a break or bad connection.  IIRC it's usually blue
in the type 44's.  It goes from the alternator to the back of the
instrument cluster, check it for continuity.  It's so accessible that I
just replace with a thicker gauge wire when it's suspect.
