4kq Fuel line replacement options...nylon?

Hello all,

Recently I was under my '87 4kq and noticed that my metal fuel lines 
have seen better days. They are rusting at the clamps like every other 
Audi that has spent 20+ years in the northeast. I would like to replace 
them before I spring a leak and set the car on fire. I am looking for a 
permanent solution, I don't think I can get away with cutting out the 
rusted sections and splicing in high pressure rubber line. (car 
inspections in this state can be a pain at times)

Can these metal lines be replaced with nylon tubing (like all modern 
cars have) instead of metal? I have never bent and flared piping before 
and it seems like a pain to deal with on this car, especially since I 
don't have a lift. I was thinking about cutting off the line at the fuel 
filter (to retain the flared fitting) and right before they go up into 
the engine bay and using nylon to steel compression unions to connect 
the sections. My only concern is if nylon line can handle the higher 
pressures the CIS  pump puts out. My only other option might be to have 
a mechanic deal with it (very pricey I'm sure). The pre-bent OEM lines 
appear to still be available, but a set is about $300+ nowadays 
according to WorldImpex.
