emissions repair questions for an 87 5ktcs

Wouldn't a vacuum leak create a lean condition (and low CO, but high 
other stuff) as unmetered air is sucked in?  If George is right, and 
I'm wrong, then you should also check the underside of the michelin 
man hose (intercooler to intake).
