95 A6 Sunroof woes

Gentlemen and others,
 
I am working out the kinks on my new to me 95 a6q 5-speed and I am having  
some sunroof woes.
 
Specifically, it appears as if one of the cables has worn down and it is  not 
catching the drive gear, resulting in the two sides retracting  unevenly.  I 
suppose it cold be a gear issue on the motor, but I would  assume that both 
cables would have a problem if that were the case.
 
The question is, can the cable be secured as a separate new item?
 
Or, am I better off getting cables and a motor from a know good, but used,  
assembly.
