After spending another evening with my 95 A6q, I'm leaning more and more
toward the power control unit being the source of my problems. The intermittent
nature of this failure is driving me batty. At times, I am getting just
under 2 volts going to my switches, then 12 volts when the thing is feeling
generous. Still shutting off the system at times when I push down on a button --
power indicated by lights on the switches, push a switch and no lights or
power. Pull unit, reinstall and all is ok, until I cycle power to test the
unit again. It is better now that I have pulled and reinstalled the unit
several times, so a bad connection could be a contributing factor, but I am
thinking that it's an internal problem, not just corroded contacts.

So, if any of you have one of these units, or if anyone of going junkyarding
soon, it's located on the left hand side of the driver footwell, just behind
a piece of plastic trim under the interior hood latch release. There's a
small plastic bit that removes to reveal a screw. unscrew, slide back toward
the rear of the car, and it's the large, double-sized relay looking thing.

Your reward for your help to humanity will be total consciousness upon your
death... So, you'll have that going for you...
