02 TT roadster transmission

Just got a call from a friend about his TT transmission.  He only has 3rd
and 4th and the shop says the linkage is good.
 
I can't recall ever hearing about TT trans troubles, but it's also not
exactly on my radar so I may have tuned it out.
 
The car has 68k miles.
 
So question #1, is this common or a freak thing?  (It's stock and he
doesn't beat on it).
 
The shop is quoting 5k to rebuild and 8k for a new one from Audi.
 
I'm thinking a used one should be fairly easy to source, unless there's a
common problem with these.
 
Does anybody have or know of an available used transmission?
