Ed,
You didn't indicate if the onset of symptoms was gradual or sudden.

Is the shop familiar with the complicated transverse linkages? A small
misalignment or broken bushing can make it impossible to shift. If the
linkage is disconnected, will the transmission shift (takes some force, but
is possible)? Did they check motor and transmission mounts? How did the
fluid look?  Presuming the shop knows all of this and diagnosed correctly;

This isn't a common problem for a straight (non-accident history) TT. If it
IS internal transmission, I'd source a used one. I don't know of any, but
there are a bunch of speciality dismantlers and nationwide used part search
databases.
While he's at it, change the clutch.

Good luck helping him out,
Mark Rosenkrantz
