Actually, timing issues raise their ugly head in "normal" operation. 
They often manifest as discrepancies between "idle" and "load" conditions.

What I read of the problem sounded *exactly* like timing issues.  I only
wish I had an idea or suggestion of how to approach the problem.

Oh, wait, I do!  Timing light... hook it up and see what you're getting.
  You can do a careful "load test" (rev engine against brakes) to see
what's up, but please try to avoid the Darwin Awards.
