Huw - how familiar are you with timing the 5000 turbo quattros? AFAIK the timing is
fixed and not changeable without installing a modified chip. The distributor is either
"in-window" or not. There are some cases where the Hall distributor can be on the edge
of adjustment, but if all was done in accord with timing belt adjustment and hall
adjustment per Bentley, then rule out timing. Misfire perhaps due to bad parts, but you
can't adjust timing on the 5kt/200 and most of the other "later" engines that use single
window hall distributor and two flywheel sensors.

Actually, timing issues raise their ugly head in "normal" operation.
What I read of the problem sounded *exactly* like timing issues. I only wish I had an
idea or suggestion of how to approach the problem.
Oh, wait, I do! Timing light... hook it up and see what you're getting.
You can do a careful "load test" (rev engine against brakes) to see what's up, but
please try to avoid the Darwin Awards.
