iPod interface

So I'd love to interface my iPod with the Concert radio in the now functional A8q. I've tried the archives, but am finding alot of dead ends and broken links. Some googling found yet more broken links and discontinuted products, but eventually I found the two listed below.

Either of those would do what I'm looking to accomplish, but I'm not willing to pay the price of that second device (plus a cable and DIN-RCA adaptor). The first is tolerable, but still seems steep. I'm perfectly willing, and luckily capable, to customise as needed for a clean install. I'm not looking for anything fancy either - I'm perfectly willing to control playback on the ipod and do have the intention of neatly mounting it to the dash somewhere.
I saw in the archives a marketplace ad that had a mention of a home made interface that used the CD changer audio lines. I'm not very familiar with how the changer functions. Does the changer output a 'normal' pre-amp audio signal to the Concert, or does it speak digitally? If the former, it would seem that I could simply add a mini-DIN plug in the audio line from the changer. I could even get fancy and use a switch so the changer would still function.
Thanks for the info!
