I believe the compressor is a common failure point.  You would need to
diagnose what is wrong with the current system to figure out all that you
need.  A bad compressor is very easy to identify, it makes a hell of a
racket when engaged.

You will need to put new hoses on it if you are going R134A.  Would blow
condenser and evaporator out with solvent and replace the orifice tube if
you've had any sort of compressor failure since bits of metal get right
through the system.

I had my hoses made up by a local hose shop that deals in commercial truck
hose, relatively cheap and they've lasted 8 years so far without issue.

What is the most common failure point in AC system?  I have come across a
brand new AC compressor w/clutch and figure I might as well have AC in the
beast. (hoping of course the compressor is the key!).
