Most opt for either the B5 S4 or B6/7 S4 upgrade rather than the B6 A4 3.0
[better than stock but just barely, kinda pointless] and the B7 A4 [decent].
B5 S4 vs. B6/7 S4
* IIRC calipers are sourced from different companies [B5 = Lucas, B6/7 =
other]
* B5 S4 caliper is an older design
* B5 S4 covers a smaller surface area [but more deep]
* B5 S4 calipers are easier to find
* B6/7 S4 is larger and covers more surface area [but less deep]
* B5 S4 calipers limit wheel choices due to depth issues [will fit behind
17" sports]
* B6 S4 calipers have less fitment issues and provide more wheel choices
[will fit behind 17" sports]
* B6/7 S4 use a larger, heavier rotor
* B6/7 S4 OEM / aftermarket rotors are pricey [at normal weight]
* B6/7 S4 lightweight aftermarket choices are limited and expensive
* B6/7 S4 calipers are more expensive
* stock rotors w/a B5 S4 setup have been known to warp from time to time
[totally depends on circumstances, abuse etc., likely due to special
circumstances]
* some say the B5 S4 have a better initial bite, but less power overall
[totally debatable]
B5 S4 calipers are certainly worth it for a quick, basic upgrade that's a
noticeable improvement from OEM... as are B6/7 S4. Used B6/7 S4 are harder
to come by used and more expensive. They never last long in the classifies,
but there's always some B5 S4s around. Just sayin...
I lean towards the B6/7 S4. (Many would not agree.)

Install [B5 S4 on a B6 A4]

Past here, you start looking at the high end BBKs: Alcon, Brembo, Stoptech
=====================================
So then, a good plan would be:
OEM BASIC
Aftermarket pads, good rotors, SS lines and high temp fluid.
OEM PLUS
Front: B5 calipers, OEM / Adam's rotors, upgraded pads + SS lines
or
Front: B6/7 S4 calipers, OEM / Adam's rotors, upgraded hardware and pads +
SS lines
Rear (optional): keep the standard calipers, OEM / Adam's rotors, upgraded
hardware, pads + SS lines
Basically, just pick up used calipers and source the rest of the parts from
Matt at Europa or DTH. Keep in mind, shipping can get expensive as this stuff
is heavy.
Hope that about covers it. "
