Lubing a 5000TQ Starter

My starter has been disengaging the flywheel whenever the outside temps
are 0F or below. It's fine at warmer temps, and starts out fine at these
cold temps too for a sec or so, then the engine is no longer being
turned and the starter is spinning like mad. So it seems like the
problem is with the solenoid not pushing the gear far enough when cold,
or perhaps just not being able to hold it there.
Weather finally improved, so I pulled the starter today. No signs of any
abnormal gear wear. And of course, testing it in a shop won't tell us
much, since it works fine at warmer temps. I have heard that lubing the
starter solenoid/bendix assembly will help, so I'd am planning on doing
that. Only problem is how and with what. Bentley manuals do not cover
disassembly of the starter. So I thought I'd ask here:
1. Looks like one can take the solenoid off with three screws. Should I
do that, or will parts go flying?
2. I should be able to operate the starter from a battery. Will spraying
silicone lube in while the starter is going get to all the needed parts?
3. Suggestions on proper lubricants for the various parts?
TIA
