Googling, I found this:
"Yeph, dead battery - call 1-800-FOR-MERC, they will bring you new one to your 
house and install it. About 100$ if you out of warranty."

There are other caveats, too, like having the radio code, and this one:
"but for Model Year 2001 and newer SLKs, you also have to calibrate the ESP 
steering angle sensor (I think the procedure is in the owner's manual)."

And my guess is that maybe the year might make a difference, unless the model 
had a short life.
