I will provide a somewhat different take on the motors - having
already read others' replies.
The 2.7 and 4.2 are plain and simple, better motors. tremendously
over-engineered and durable, and a blast to own.
that said, and as others said, they are a bit more to maintain. i
dont think all that much more. The V8 has a costly timing belt
service, but other than that, no biggie. Yes, the 2.7 has those
little turbos, but treat them well and they seem to last a lon time -
150 or 200k regularly. Past care is key.
Few factory techs like working on the 3.0. But it has nto major faults.
but, as you said, your friend does nto need power. So dont pay for
power. in the end, the advice is consistent. 2.8.
But i think the 2.7 and 4.2 are great motors. Have had one of each.
And both are very durable - maybe moreso than the normal sixes. The
4.2 is juts a monster, adn the 2.7 has a forged crank, under piston
cooling, 4-bolt mains, etc., etc.
