A4 dead engine follow-up

I got word from the mechanic. They pulled one head. The valves were fine.
It was the rings that were shot. The theory is that even though there was
sufficient oil *pressure*, there wasn't sufficient oil *volume* to keep
things happy.

The "new" (120K miles) engine is in. There were a few other things that
needed doing (throttle cable, engine mounts, transmission box), and it
needed new control arms and brake rotors.

So, for 3/4 the price I bought it for a year ago, my '99 A4 is "good as new".

Lesson learned. I think if I had to do it again, I'd would have taken
the salvage value and got something different. And if I knew then what
I know now, if I got to do it again, I would have waited, taken the money
I paid for the A4 plus the money I used to fix it, and gotten something
*really* nice, like an A6 4.2.
