So I spent an hour or so with VAGCom on it to just rule out every possible electrical fault. Everything checked out, so I went in to the pan. Got the pan, filter, and valve body off. Through the bottom the clutch packs are visible and there are no signs of them being hot - no discoloration at all. I can even see friction meterial on the discs. I also figured out that where the old filter got damaged there is no possible way that the trans could have gotten starved for oil - the entire filter/pickup is below the running oil level, so in theroy even with NO filter the pump could still pick oil out of the pan.
I *HAVE* found some bits of plastic in some pores of the valve body, so I'm going to take the valve body apart and clean it all out. I'm betting that there are bits of the broken filter stuck in oil passage ways in the valve body. I also found a snap ring that held a spring to be out of position, likely jarred loose in the impact.
BTW, ElsaWin is very clear and stocked with tons of information on the innards of this transmission.
Unfortunately I forgot my camera today :-(. I'll snap some pictures on Monday.
