I'm not sure if my vote got counted last night, but:
How much would it be to put a 1.8T in it instead of the V6? They are pretty
tuneable
That might be cheaper since there seem to be more of them in scrap yards.
If you are looking for a cheap reliable and fun backup then your $1000 might
go a long way to acquiring a decent Golf 2 GTI (16v)
It's not a Quattro, but still practical and a fun drive. I would also
venture that if you asked Louis-Alain and Brady what they would prefer to
use to hammer around on ice and gravel: an URQ, a B2 90Q or my Golf, then it
would take 3 or 4 pints to arrive at a clear favourite......
Also the Golfs were built by the cousins of Team Doorhandle, so when the
handles do fail, they at least cost less than the US federal government
bailout package to replace and have the added benefit of lasting a bit
longer than the average Canadian government (federal or provincial).
So:
Either find a cheaper way to replace the engine, or take your banana ($1000)
and buy a GTI

A4 seats are kind of notorious for being uncomfortable. You have to swap
them out for a set of B6/B7 S4 Recaros (if you have power seats) or change
to a completely aftermarket seat (Recaro, Sparco, etc.).
Sounds like you need a seat with an adjustable thigh support.
