Kent, I hate to say it, but if you're looking for a reliable commuter that
you can run with minimal maintenance, an Audi or VW is not really going to
do it. Especially if you aren't going to do the maintenance yourself.
You really should be looking for something more along the lines of a 4
cylinder, manual transmission Camry. There are a bunch of Camry taxis
running around Montreal with well over 500k km, original engine, no rebuild,
some on the original transmission. That's amazing.
Maintenance costs will be far lower than any Audi you're looking at. That's
why resale on something like a Camry is so much higher than on an Audi which
was a far more expensive car when new.
