So if it's not a GTI, then it sounds like you need a 97-05 TDI passat wagon.
Nice ride, quiet, quick enough, comfy, like the beast that you know (a4),
trunk big enough that you can put the seats down and have a kip in it if the
worst comes to the worst and you have to wait for the AAA/CAA/AA (delete as
geographically applicable)
I'm pretty dedicated to german stuff, but really something like a 160bhp 6
speed Octavia 4wd wagon would also be good. Audi's premium for leather
seats, touchy feely dashes and damped grab handles is great, but Essential?
That's another question. There's plenty of other VAG products that go just
as well for less $$$.
Anyway, i think that we've (or at least, i've) done this one to death, so
that's all from me and good luck with the hunt for a replacement
