Max,
The wear sensors work this way:
They're basically a loop of wire.  When the pad wears thin, the wire gets
worn and continuity breaks.  To keep the warning light off, you need to
short the two wires together.

With the cold/moisture/salt, you probably have a corroded wire.  In central
NY, even with solder and heat shrink, the splices only seem to last about 5
years before needing re-done (due to corrosion).  Of course, for MOST
owners, 5 years is more than "lifetime."  =)

I just did this service on my old 1995 GTiVR6.  The splice lasted about 10
years.  It's kinda cool to still do the occasional work on my old personal
vehicle.
