I wouldn't worry about the brown residue on any of the valve cover  surfaces. 
I think that this is the last surface to warm up and therefore is a  little 
more prone to collecting that residue. I have taken many engines apart  with 
that type of stuff on the VC and nothing on the head. Doesn't look like you  own 
a 4 cyl  so "sludge" should not be a problem. If this is a 'new to you'  
vehicle without documented oil changes, change the oil & dump it at  1500 miles. 
If the oil looks real dirty do it again at 1500. Soon it will be  clean and you 
can start to extend the interval. When I got my V-6 it had  140K  on it with 
the recommended 7500 mi oil change interval. I did  two 1500 mile changes and 
have now worked my way up to 5000 interval. With  a 6+ qt oil pan I will stay 
at 5K (easy to remember). But then, I drive the car  like an old lady and use 
only dino oil.............. (flame,  flame)
