Fuel pressure accumulator

Hi guys;

Another surprise in the 88 90Q I'm trying to put on the road:  the fuel accumulator (447-133-441)is leaking, it's rusted out.  Does the accumulator have anything to do with keeping the pressure in the system (does it contain a check valve) or is it there just to smooth out the pulses of the fuel pump?  In other words, can I simply remove it and not install a new one?
