odometer/trip meter dead

I would like to likewise repair my odometer meter which stopped at 289,000
km, replaced with other speedometer/tacho unit, compensate with excel file.

Where to repair so that odometer will continue turning over?

I don't think it affects the cruise control, that interacts with the 
speedo, not the odo.

While it can be scary if you've never had your inst cluster out, it's 
really not that hard to replace that gear.  And I think I took pictures 
of every single step, or at least, I hope I did!
