2.8 V6 30v lifters question

Is there anyway to differentiate a bad lifter from a good lifter on a  
30v motor (other that a ticking noise after it's all back together...  
doh!)?

I'm putting new (used) heads on an '03 Passat 4-motion and would  
really hate it if I find a lifter or two... or 3 ticking after all  
this work.  But the thought of spending over $500 on all new lifters  
is equally painful...
