Concerning Coupe Front Strut Upper mounts

Hi Rob,

On my urQ, I am at my 5th front set since 2001 (the 1983 OEM blues, then 4
sets of aftermarket greens, then one set of newer blues). Usually, it's the
bearing that is destroyed, and don't want to spin freely under the weight of
the car. I have one that is like that on the car at this moment, if I can
find en evening to do the job, I'll let you know what is destroyed on this
one.

-----Message d'origine-----

Had an interesting time replacing the front springs on my '87 CGT with
lowish miles. It seems that they are unobtanium from the dealer now, but I
managed to find a Lesjofors (sp?) pair.

It turned out that one of my old spring was broken in two places, - the
last 4 or so inches from each end had broken. I knew one end had gone and
when it happened, but the other end must have been gone many moons ago - the
broken end was properly corroded.

Anyway I had got a couple of new green top mounts. Having heard people
decry their lifespan and having now done the job I wonder about the failure
mode - my old ones only showed up in terms of slackness in the bearing
washer - perhaps around 1mm of play compared to almost none on the new
mounts.

So any comments? is it just this bearing play that is the normal complaint
, or is there some other way that they fail that I'm not aware of?

    Cheers Rob
