Parting a car Question

The junkyards are paying abut $45 a ton here. So, figure $75 for a 4K. If
the :gypsies" who haul in cars get an Audi for free, if you deduct
transportation to the junkyard from the $75 and value the time at anything it just
isn't worth the effort.
Wheels are an important point. In order to make any profit at all, the
gypsies pull the wheels ($10.00 each), the battery ($3-4) and the cat (up to
$120), then the "iron" is sold at $45 a ton. So, without wheels, they are
losing $40.00.
Quite a few of the smaller local yards have closed, $45 a ton doesn't bring
in enough "weight". Quite a few more have gone into "export". They rent
out small portions of the yards to Nigerians, Egyptians and another
nationality I can't recall. The "exporters" buy relatively expensive cars (I saw
one yard breaking up 3 A6's today) from the insurance salvage auctions and
bring them to the yard, they then do their own disassembly and fill
containers for overseas shipment. Most go to Africa. Must be rough there, they fill
up pickups truck beds with engines, trannys, and PTO's, then they weld a
chain to each one and the truck bed. That is to prevent disappearance.
Guatemalans sneak into Texas and buy a school bus. They drive the bus up
here and then fill it with Toyota cars and parts. Then, they drive it back
to Guatemala. Must be fairly lucrative, they tell me they pay at least
$2000 in bribes to get through Mexico.
So the short answer, things are not so good for the small, older, car just
sitting in the yard. I have seen advertised prices up to $100, for that
they want wheels, battery and a cat. Not like last year when scrap was $400 a
ton. That fell apart when China declined further imports of scrap.
