The story has been told many times. There is a famous VWVortex post about 
somebody doing this on thier 1.8t. Written exactly the same way. Here's a 
version I found on an Audi forum:

Likely a tall tale told as truth. Like the guy with JATO rockets on his 
Buick, and the myth that wastegates make chirping noises when not plumbed 
into the exhaust....
