Yes they did. Even earlier than that, they were using "hydramatics"  in the 
50's. They tried to "improve them" and found they didn't perform as well  as 
the "unimproved" models.
 
You know, it is just silly to think there are any automotive secrets hidden  
in the "Black Forest" (schwartzenwald ?). There is nothing that GM doesn't 
know  about automobiles. Whether they choose to produce it is another  matter.
