... when they were new the caps should have held themselves in ... I suspect
the goop may have been installed by a PO or service provider somewhere along
the way.  

You need to find some adhesive that won't set as the caps need to come off
when you have tires fitted ... 

The stuff that comes to my mind is that sticky gasketing material they use
to hold and seal taillights ...

Just put on the Ronal's from the partsvagen.  They have Michelin X-one's on
them with some meat left. (meat left=score, x-one= whatever).  They ride
pretty well so I'm content with that.   Only issue is one of the center caps
(they are the small black cups) came off /loose.  There seems to be some
sort of gasket material that was around the inside edge of the rim that has
fallen off/disintegrated on the one rim. (basically gives a bit of meat for
the cap to stay snug in place.)   What is this wondrous goop and where do I
get more..or do I want more.. These little items cause me most grief for
some reason.  My desired result is for the cap to fit and not come loose.  I
should have taken a picture.but instead you get 150 words.
