The driver information display (the rectangular LED display dead center
in the cluster) tends to die over time. Make sure it has all good pixels.
On my 1999 A4, it's totally dark unless the temperature is below 35F. I
think it may have hidden the low oil warning light that lead to me killing
its engine. I can't imagine they'd have "improved" its longevity.

The fix involved replacing the cluster. A few people have found the LCD
panel on eBay and unsoldered and resoldered it in, but there are a lot
of connections and they're tiny.
