IIRC on the 30v you don't remove the crank sensor. There is a black plastic plug on the lower portion of the drivers side of the engine block held by one bolt with a 10mm head. It isn't easy to see and less easy to reach. On A4s I usually remove the horn which is bolted below the engine mount to make the access a tiny bit better.

Thanks for the replies folks. Finally found it. Actually, it's not too bad to get too. If you look at the drivers side motor mount, there is a harness attached to it by a 12mm bolt (I think 10-13 mm at least). Loosen that so that the harness is out of the way. Then on the block (to the left of the loosened harness and about 8-10" above), there is a 10 mm bolt holding a cap into the block. Remove the bolt and the cap comes out with a little jiggle. I used a 1/4" wrench with an extension to get to the bolt. It's fairly excessible once the harness is out of the way.

Here are my mis-adventures so far:
Putting on the serpentine belt tensioner and tensioning the belt, I broke off the tensioning bolt. Idiot that I am, I had not placed the belt tensioner on correctly. Went to the VAG dealer and got another (124$ ouch!!!). Got it right this time.

Putting on plugs and wires, the breather hose that goes across the valve covers snapped. Another 80$ from local parts supplier (ouch!!!).

Drained the transmission pan, was able to loosen all but one torx bolt which I managed to strip. Finally got it out by using a bigger torx bit. Dropped the pan and a bunch of trans fluid all over the garage floor and my right arm and face and then gave up and went to bed.

Planning on finishing up tonight. Noticed the transmission tail pipe seal is leaking but I think I'll get that done at a local shop. Can't work on my back much longer. Will be doing the CV joint and tie rod ends once I put everything back together. I hope it starts!
