VSS PPR, etc

How many pulses per revolution does the '01 Audi (6 speed) VSS put out?
I'm trying to determine if it's compatible with a Porsche speedometer.

Also, does the VSS run directly to the speedometer, or does it pass
through the engine or chassis control modules? If it passes through the
modules, does the signal remain unchanged?

Thanks,

Andy

piech takes his play to the public.....

-----------------------
OLBIA, Italy (Reuters) - Volkswagen Chairman Ferdinand Piech favors VW
CEO
Martin Winterkorn over Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking to run a combined
VW/Porsche group.

Talking to reporters at a car launch, Piech named Winterkorn as his
candidate to head the merged group. He said it was unlikely Wiedeking
would
be happy to stay on in a more "lowly" role. Such criticism from Piech
has
ended the careers of other managers.

Piech also played down the chances for Porsche finance chief Holger
Haerter
to take a top job in the new group, saying his counterpart at VW, Hans
Dieter Poetsch, was more credible.

Piech revealed it had been decided that the headquarters of the new
group
would be in VW's home of Wolfsburg.

Piech's comments late Monday are a clear sign that Europe's biggest
carmaker
has gained the upper hand in a power struggle with Porsche Automobile
SE.
Porsche ran up heavy debts buying its 51 percent stake in VW and the
company
has been unable to raise finance to complete its aim of taking a 75
percent
stake. Now that its gamble to take over VW has backfired, Porsche is
fighting for influence in a merger between Porsche and VW whose brands
include Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini.

Piech warned that Porsche needed first to get its 9 billion euro ($12.3
billion) of debts under control before a deal could be agreed. "I cannot
imagine that VW would assume another company's risks," said Piech, who
is
also a shareholder in Porsche. He added that he was not in favor of
selling
a stake in Porsche to an investor.

Porsche's stock dropped 7.5 percent on the comments, which one analyst
said
raised questions about whether the carmaker could cope with its debts.
Preference shares in Volkswagen rose 2.6 percent.

Piech's remarks demonstrate how the tables have turned on Porsche after
an
audacious takeover bid hatched by Wiedeking and Haerter backfired.
Wiedeking
had wanted to secure access to Volkswagen's technical know-how and the
car
parts that it uses. He used share options to creep towards majority
control, making billions of euros in paper gains as Volkswagen's stock
price
spiked. But the move left the Stuttgart-based group with heavy debts,
which
became difficult to handle as credit markets froze.

For Piech, the merger -- which both car companies say they want to
hammer
out within four weeks -- presents him with an opportunity to tighten his
grip on both Volkswagen and Porsche. Piech and his brother, who together
own
just over a quarter of Porsche, have been deadlocked in a dispute with
their
cousins from the rival Porsche clan, who have a bigger stake.
Swallowing
the sports car maker into the Volkswagen empire would reduce Porsche's
status to being just one car brand among 10.

Piech also signaled that there was disagreement over the value of the
Porsche sports car business, saying that an 11 billion euro price tag
was 2
billion euros too high.

Thanks Stephen, this is very encouraging (sp?).

I am not afraid of the Gods, I have an urQ, you know... And following
this
list made my fears fly away a long time ago : I am more in the dark with
a
carbureted car than any Audi since the 80's.

In fact, it looks like this should be a nice addition to the family.
When I
was younger, I always wanted a 4KQ, after that a 80Q, but for some
reason,
the A4 did not made my heartbeat pulse faster, until that B6 appeared.
Now
is the time to get a small chassis Audi.

I am testing 2009 Audi these days : S8-V10 this week, Q7 TDI next week,
Q5
3.2 the other week. That S8 is a phenomenally strong car, never drove a
wider powerband engine, with the possible exception of the GT-R. There
is so
much torque/HP that if you floor it at 60 mph to pass a truck, the nose
of
the car rise while the V10 climbs toward the 7500 rpm cut-off... Amazing
beast. But the ride is way too harsh compare to a regular A8, even if
the
wheels are "only" 19 inchers with four-seasons Pirelli P6s.

Louis,

At the risk of angering the Audi 'Gods', I have had none of those
problems on my car, a 2002 3.0 A4 quattro sedan,6-spd manual
transmission, with 114,000 km. Also, no problems with the LED display,
as mentioned by another 'lister'. Those problems were pretty common with

the B5 A4s, but not the B6s, AFAIK.

The car has been pretty reliable, so far, although I recently detected
some gear oil seepage from the rear of the transmission. Probably the
rear seal, which will need to be replaced soon. Oh well, I was planning
on changing the transmission & rear diff gear oil soon, anyway.

A year & a half ago, the passenger side lumbar support switch shorted
out, burning a lot of the wiring harness under the seat. Pretty scary
seeing all the smoke coming from under the seat. Bad design, with no
small current fuse or breaker protecting that part of the circuit, only
a large current breaker for all circuits, including the seat adjust
motors with their high current draw.

Check the glove box hinges & 'brake', which causes the glove box door to

slowly open instead of dropping suddenly. The early versions of the
'brake' put undue strain on the hinges, causing them to break or crack.
Can be repaired, as I am doing with mine right now.

The clutch switch broke a couple of years ago, which didn't allow the
cruise control to function. Easy fix, especially if you have access to
VAG-COM or VCDS as it is now called.

The speaker connectors sometimes go intermittent. Known problem, easy
fix.

Nothing much else to report in the way of recent major problems.
