My antenna extends automatically when radio is turned on, and recedes down
when radio is turned off. Antenna is located just to left of trunk lid by
the back window.

If your car has a FUBA antenna, it's on the roof, in the base. Otherwise, I
don't know.
FYI- FUBA made a change to the power side of the amp. The early units had a
separate +12V wire in addition to the coax, using the chassis mounting hole
as ground. The later units combined the +12V in the coax. When going with
an aftermarket head unit, you'll need a converter to power a FUBA.

You've located the speaker issue. Reception is a broken antenna wire, or
more likely... a failed antenna amplifier. I think the Type 44 has an
antenna amp. Pretty much all of the 1980s and 1990s VAG products have them.

In my type 44 the front right speaker I managed to reach where wires are
connected to speakers, move a bit and the speaker worked again. Then 1 hour
later the speaker stopped working. When leaving Toronto reception is limited
to a few AM stations. Not sure if antenna or radio is source of problem.
