For the '88 5000CS (turbo-quattro) at least, the retractable Fuba antenna
assembly mounted in the left rear fender contains an integrated RF amp.
Sadly, the fix for a bad RF amp is a new, NLA, Fuba antenna assembly. If
this might describe your situation, you might try contacting the fellow who
runs www.antennaworld.com out of Miami, FL. At one time, it was possible
to get rebuilt retractable Fubas and repair parts from him. May be a couple
decades too late now though.
