I actually don't have a VAGCom of my own. The shop I previously worked for 
has one (which is the primary reason I didn't buy my own) and I'm very 
spoiled by that! One of these days I'll stop by there and pull some codes. 
Maybe I'll ask for my own for my birthday comming up ;-). The trouble is 
that I need a Durametric (VAGCom equivilent for Porsche) at least as much so 
it's hard to decide which to get first.

If a controller is malfunctioning, then VAG-Com should show a fault. If
there's no code, to help diagnosis, usually one can activate any function in
the car via VAG-com to test physically the different systems. As an example,
one can light all the idiot lights of the dashboard to see if one is burned,
or run the ABS pump to bleed it after a replacement, etc.

Cody, I'm sure you have a VAG-com or even a genuine VAG1151/1152...

It seems that the switch is part of the latch mechanism and would require
pulling the door panel and removing the latch from the door. I may go there
one day, but for now I just moved the kids booster seat to the left side and

voila no reason to open the right rear door anymore ;-).

I'll note that the open door diagram on the LCD display indicates the door
being open and closed properly.

The wiring diagram shows that there is just one switch per door and it
signals a control unit - it doesn't carry current to the lights themselves.
