ABS light and Vagcom scanner

Two questions..

The ABS warning light on my 2000 A4 quattro is coming on. 

Since my cheapo generic scanner doesn't display ABS codes I'm looking to buy a vagcom scanner. Plenty of places advertising on the Internet. Anyone have any recommendations?

Also, my Bentley warns that the rear wheels would be prone to lockup when ABS is disabled. Anyone had any experience on how serious a problem this is?
