As others already said, JB Weld is the stuff you want to use. I had to fill
a fairly deep scratch on the top surface of my engine block, a scratch that
I made myself when trying to bring the WX short block alone, in my arms, in
my basement via a 7 step stairway. Stupidest thing I did since I was 16
years. 

Anyhow, the tapering inch-long scratch was ending in an oil passage, so JB
weld was used with success so far. No leaks. You'll be surprised how it can
fill tiny scratches easily.

I don't think I could get anything like JB 
Weld to stick in them enough that the surface would be smoother after 
additional sanding.
