Re: 2.8 30v
As always I want to thank the Q-listers for all the input, concern and
comments. After checking all the valve timing, and fuel delivery possibilities
and with everything looking OK I was down to injector pulse and waiting for
information on procedures when I remembered that I had also changed the
PVC Tubes and Suction valve while I was doing the Timing Belt. In order to
get to the suction valve I had to remove the plate that holds 3 vacuum valves
and several connectors in the throttle body area. I pulled everything
apart, nothing was disconnected but wiggled around all the connectors just to
make sure. I also noticed that the VW braided vacuum lines, although in
tact, looked like they could be replaced (some looked tightly kinked). I
replaced the questionable lines and varoom! the motor started (well, it was more
like hit on one, then two, three...etc. but it was running!
I really can't pinpoint the problem area. Vag-Com showed no codes, but
something wasn't working good enough to make it fire. I think it was something
with the connectors/vacuum lines around the suction pump that was the
problem.
Like I had stated before, compression on a motor that was sitting for 3
months was:

100-100-40-75-120-120
 after running for 20 min....
210-210-220-215-215-215 (The car has 175K mules on it, not bad IMHO)

It was probably a combination of things, nothing bad enough to throw a
code, just a bunch of little things.
But the cure came from remembering EVERYTHING that was touched during the
overhaul and going back thru it, one step at a time.
Thanks,
Jim
