I once had a P-car 911 that had a rotor in the distributor that had an
invisible crack in the strip of metal along the top.  When it heated up, it
separated.  No spark.

Sure it does, probably in the distributor though. They can fail the same way
as the sensors mounted on the camshaft and at the flywheel. The technology
is very similar, just where the sensor is mounted, and what it's looking at
(distributor shaft vs flywheel teeth and camshaft).
