Forget the A6, buy a 1999 A8 (non L), it's a few hundred pound lighter!!
As for the transmission, I've got 170,000 on mine (97 A8) but I've always
been in charge of the shift points. I try to keep the engine above 2000rpm
if I'm dialing in torque. My logic is to keep the transmission pump working
to get good plate lockup.
I run synthetic oil out to 10K which is the service interval for late model
A8s...and that is because of the recent switch to synthetics and the huge
8qt oil supply.
I don't know the weights for the later A8s versus the A6, but you might be
surprised by the savings from aluminum space frame w aluminum panels. ABTW,
if you hit anything be ready to have the car totaled.
