Stuart,

You have several options here. The first is to do the typical upgrades
to a Naturally Aspirated engine. This involves free flowing exhaust
including manifolds, bigger throttle body, ported heads, performance
chip. However, all of this will probably net you 30 hp max. The chip
will make the biggest difference in the feel, most noticably the
throttle response will be much improved. I know Intended Acceleration
made one, not sure if they still do.

There was a pretty good support folowing for the 12V's back in teh
day, so you should be able to find the ported heads, throttle bodies,
exhaust manifolds, and chips around.

However, you may very will spend what you would on an engine swap, for
these seemingly small gains. Which brings us to:

The supercharger is designed for the 30V V6's put into 98 and newer
A4's. It will not bolt up to the 12V V6's without significant
modification.

So, after that, you are pretty much stuck with an engine swap. You can
go with the 2.7TT from an S4 or A6, as mentioned. They came stock with
250hp. You can swap to the 2.2 I-5 20V turbo, which came with 217 or
227 hp, depending on which model is came from. You can swap to the 30V
V6, and add the supercharger, I believe this ends up at 295 hp. Or,
you can stick a V8 in it. Those are 3.6 and 4.2 liter engines, and
range from 240-360hp, stock. Oh, there is also the RS4 engine at
420hp, 8250RPM redline (and the similar R8 engine). Here it all
depends on how much time and/or money you want to spend. Most of these
engines come up for sale either on the marketplace or ebay.

The turbo engines can be upgraded very quickly with a chip and usually
wastegate spring and exhaust work. Of course, since you will be doing
a custom exhaust for the swap, you can put a very nice system on it at
that time ahyhow. The I-5 goes to about 280hp with a chip, I believe
the 2.7TT goes over 300. The V-6 with supercharger will bolt right in,
the others will require modification. However, the wiring harness will
have to be changed for the 30V, as it adds much more hardware (such as
variable valve timing) and this will be required for maximum
performance and proper running. The other engines I've listed will
bolt up to the transmission. Clutches are a different story. You will
have to mix and match for most of them, based on the engine and your
transmission input shaft.

My best advice would be to decide just where you want to go with the
car, and then lay out a plan from there.

Hope this helps you on your quest for more power,
Tony
