Frustrations set in.. prematurely? (SAME 84 start issue)

I bought a cheap-ish CO meter. I used to trust it implicitly, but over time
I realised it's a bit inconsistent and that I need to back it up a little
with actual miles of usage.
My cars are both plain CIS and being pre '93 emissions targets are set high
here in the uk, (up to 3.5% CO allowed) so I know this is a different
scenario to the OP, however it is interesting that three flats CCW from my
optimum position the car still starts and runs ok(ish), what I notice is
that there is slightly less urge per comparable throttle opening at lower
speeds and if I snap the throttle open before the car warms up I can
sometimes prompt a backfire.
So three flats (or half a turn) CCW on a plain CIS seems to be the
difference between running great and running OK but right on the edge of
lean.
Going the other way a similar amount the car continues to run great (as in
just as good as optimum), but warm starts become hard (need to floor the
throttle) and fuel consumption plummets.
So just a few reference points if they are any good to any one.
Cheers Rob.
