For the airbag, there is a magic disconnect wire above the drivers knees,
in a small panel in the dash under-cover. Disconnecting the battery is not
necessary or helpful for the airbag step itself. It is not a bad idea for
the headlamp switch portion though, as there are wires in that area that
are hot all the time. I wouldn't work on the airbag without following the
manual to the letter, personally.
I am sorry to say that I do not know the size of the Torx driver that hold
on the bag, but 30T rings a bell. I don't understand what you are asking
about with regard to the 3/4" drive ratchet. It sounds like much more than
is necessary. The only time I break out that heavy equipment is to do
wheel bearings. The nut that holds on the wheel is large but not
particularly tight.
